General Info

• Greece is inexpensive and the people are very friendly. There are great beaches and, of course, the incredible ancient ruins.
• Avoid August as it's too hot and crowded. Greeks take the month of August off and head to the coast.
• Campsites are great value in Greece with many amenities. Restaurants stay open late, sometimes after midnight. Try the ouzo, a local spirit. It tastes a bit like sambuca, but stronger. Cans of beer in shops and markets are very cheap.

Highlights

Crete - It's a large resort island but Crete has many ancient ruins and beautiful scenery. Corfu is also worth a look.

Athens - Although heavily polluted and noisy, Athens is actually quite laid back. Crime is low and there are some of the best ancient sites in Europe to be seen here. Check out the Acropolis, an ancient city, and the Temple of Athena. Get free maps and fact sheets on the major sites at any tourist office.
