Hobart

In the south - east of the island lies Hobart, Australias' second oldest city and one of its best. You must visit Hobart when in Tasmania to enjoy its beauty and the friendliness of its people. Hobart is quite compact and easy to get around.

Things to see and do

There's a lot to see here for history buffs, starting with the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery on MacQuarie Street. Australias' oldest theatre is the Theatre Royal which is on Campbell Street in the city dating back to 1837. Take a ghost tour in the penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts. Take a walk down to Salamanca place on the harbour and have a look at the old warehouses that date back to the 1830s'. They now house restaurants, bars and galleries. Battery point is another area teeming with history.

Make like Charlie and pay a visit to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory on Cadbury Road, Claremont, or have a drink at the Cascade Brewery on Cascade Road. This is the oldest brewery in Australia (so you'll be brushing up on your history too) and Cascade is regarded by many as the best lager in the country.

You will probably notice a rather large mountain when you are in Hobart. That is Moun Welington, which is great for walks and to enjoy the beautiful views. Get a bus from Franklin Square.
